- Abstract
The biological control through predators is seen as a promising alternative to chemical insect pest control. Phytoseiulus macropilis has been found associated with populations of the striped mite, Tetranychus urticae in strawberry plantations in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this work, the sublethal effects of azadirachtina on the natural ability of P. macropilis to detect volatile compounds from strawberry plants infested with T. urticae was evaluated by using olfactometry assays. The results show that P. macropilis predatory mite can distinguish odors from nonattacked strawberry plants and those from strawberry plants attacked by T. urticae. Azadirachtina at a concentration of 0.31 mg i.a/L did not interfere in the olfactory response of P. macropilis fed with sprinkled striped mites.
