- Abstract
This article reports on a study that examined coronary disease in patients with abdominal obesity and the effect of the selective cannabinoid type 1 receptor antagonist rimonabant on slowing the progression of heart disease. Through a randomized controlled trial patients received either rimonabant or a placebo and underwent coronary intravascular ultrasonography at the beginning and end of the trial. The article discusses the results of the trial and the conclusion that rimonabant had a favorable effect on patients at the secondary endpoint of the study. The article also notes that more imaging and outcomes trials are necessary.
