- Abstract
The article presents research examining the relations between pulse pressure and the incidence of atrial fibrillation (AF), which poses a high rate of morbidity and mortality. The database of the Framingham (Massachusetts) Heart Study was mined for over 5000 adult patients initially free of AF. AF developed in 13% of patients a median of 12 years after pulse pressure assessment. The research concludes that pulse pressure is a significant risk factor for incident AF. Further research may indicate whether interventions to reduce pulse pressure will curtail the incidence of AF.
