- Abstract
The article presents summary of the current data on patients at particular high-risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, specifically those with a functionally univentricular heart who have had staged reconstruction with ultimate conversion to the Fontan circulation. The article restricts itself to children who require cardiac surgery as neonates or young infants. There is an increased incidence of structural abnormalities of the brain in children with structural cardiac abnormalities. Neurodevelopmental abnormalities are prevalent and are major contributors to adverse health-related quality of life outcomes.
