- Abstract
The article focuses on the physiological benefits and harmful effects of oxygen therapy. Topics discussed include near completion of oxyhaemoglobin saturation at the partial pressure of oxygen in the arteries, the beneficial and damaging effects of hyperoxia, determination of long-term pulmonary oxygen toxicity, the vascular effects of hyperoxia, such as decreased heart rate and systemic vasoconstriction, and the beneficial effect of hyperoxia-induced vasoconstriction in brain injury.
