- Abstract
As a basic construct of Analytical Psychology, the collective unconscious (C. G. Jung) is described in a very contradictory way. Theoretically, we present the collective unconscious as a vast resource of human experience, anchored in symbols and myths. At the same time, the collective seems to be a threat to the individual and to the process of individuation; an incest-uroboric space from which the ego must be pulled and rescued. In practice, we encounter the polar manifestations: The collective unconscious is both an ancestral resource that supports the psychic roots of the individual, and at the same time connects us to haunting transgenerational traumas. These are birth curses and other unresolved family issues. A case history and a personal experience of an Israeli colleague illustrate the tensions of the unconscious.
