- Authors
Flanagan, Eileen
- Abstract
The article focuses on establishment of Poor Clare life in the U.S. in the 19th century that was led by Mothers Maddalena Bentivoglio and Constanza who received negative evaluations from bishops in the country. According to the article, Mother Bentivoglio was forced to confront social and episcopal opposition due to the perception that the Poor Clare life was incompatible with the American way of lufe and Catholic culture. It explores the history of religious life, religious practice and spirituality which illuminate evidence of marginalization of Poor Clare life from the narratives of the American Catholic community. The life of Clare, the first Franciscan women, is also included.
