- Abstract
An essay on conjecture, imagination, and disorder in fiction is presented. It examines the views of Cartesians and empiricists on imagination in the eighteenth century. The author analyzes the novel "Northanger Abbey," by Jane Austen, and the 1774 book "A Journey to the Western Isles of Scotland," by Samuel Johnson.
