- Abstract
Introduction. There is a great variability of the branching pattern of the facial nerve in the parotid gland. Some authors describe a parotidian plexus from which originate the five branches for the muscles of facial expression. The others consider that the facial nerve trunk divides in two trunks: temporofacial, from wich emerge the temporal, zygomatic an buccal branches and cervicofacial, from which emerge the marginal mandibular and the cervical branches. Material and methods. We dissected the facial nerves of the three formolized cadavers. Results. Four of the facial nerves dissescted divided into the temporofacial and cervicofacial trunks, and the other two specimens had a facial trunk that divided directly into five branches. The importance of knowledge of these variations is crucial for the surgeon, in order to perform a careful dissection, to preserve the integrity of the nerve and its branches, including the anastomoses, to avoid the intraoperative incidents and the postoperative complications.
