- Title
Women, Men, and Early 'Gay Lib'
- Authors
Picano, Felice
- Abstract
The article presents a brief history of the early gay liberation movement in the 1970s. The author focuses on the "accepted lie" that there was GLBT unity in the movement. Lesbians who left the movement to join feminist organizations like the National Organization of Women felt they had good reason for separating from their gay brothers and the patriarchal culture. Although some gay men supported women's liberation and ERA, the growing power of NOW and radical feminism changed relations between the two groups. The Gay Liberation Front and Gay Activists Alliance fostered newer organizations that have moved the GLBT agenda along.
