- Authors

- Abstract
Investigates the epistemological roots of iconicity in Philip Melanchthon's (1497-1560) works by tracing the modification of the relationship between image and thought in Melanchthon's theological philosophy. The article shows Melanchthon's evolution toward some kind of metaphysics of language. In the connection between painting and dialectic at the service of theology, there is not sufficient evidence to suggest the superiority of painting to words in Melanchthon's dialectic. In Melanchthon's system, the external form of language is a picture of reality. Melanchthon laid the foundations of the ontology of language because language began to determine the horizons of metaphysical reflection.
