- Abstract
Introduction. In the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, the government has implemented effective preventive measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic. In this context, AISPO NGO has been active in the area for 7 years with international health cooperation projects that support local institutions and staff. During the COVID-19 emergency preparedness, AISPO worked on the response capacity of the health staff through the training of the health care workers on the topics of safety, infection prevention and control and nursing care of COVID-19 patients. The objective of the study is to evaluate the effects of these trainings carried out within an international cooperation project in the province of Duhok, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Methods. This study has a quasi-experimental pre-post test design. The knowledge of the three trainings participants (March-April 2020) was investigated through a different questionnaire for each course, used as pre and post-test. Results. 660 subjects, most of them nurses, attended the three trainings: Course 1 “Infection Prevention and control during health care in case of COVID-19 patients” (N=193), Course 2 “Nursing care in the COVID-19 patients - Basic course” (N=110), Course 3 “Nursing care in the COVID-19 patients - Basic and advanced course” (N=357). In the three trainings carried out, a statistically significant improvement (p<0.001) emerges between the median results of the pre-test and post-test: in Course 1 the median score in the pre-test is 5(2), in the post-test it is 6(2); in Course 2 the results show a median score of 5(2) in the pre-test and 7(2) in the post-test; in Course 3 the median score increases from 4(3) in the pre-test to 7(2) in the post-test. Discussion. The trainings have ensured international standards and evidence-based content and, at the same time, they have been adapted to locally available resources to ensure sustainability. The study shows that in all courses, the median pre-test score was less than 6, so the evaluation of knowledge was insufficient, while in the post-test it always reached levels of sufficiency or higher (≥ 6), with statistically significant results (p<0.001). The limits of the study are the non-random sampling and the pre and post-test carried out on the same group. Conclusions. The intervention of AISPO in partnership with the Directorate General of Health, in Duhok province, has been effective in training a considerable number of health care workers in preparation for the COVID-19 emergency response. The increase in knowledge should result in improving care for Covid-19 patient and a reduction in the risky behaviour that exposes health workers to the risk of infection and, consequently, reduce its incidence.
