- Abstract
Background: In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevelance of hypercortisolemia and the diagnostic role of salivary cortisol among hypercortisolemia screening tests in Type 2 diabetic and nondiabetic obese patients. Methods: This study was performed at Endocrine Outpatient Unit of Şişli Etfal Training and Research hospital from 2007 to 2008, and included 82 obese patients; 62 had Type 2 DM, aged <75 years, and body mass index >27 kg/m2. Midnight salivary and serum cortisol levels were measured. Results: The results of the tests for hypercortisolemia screening were not significantly different among patients with or without Type 2 DM (p>0.05). Midnight salivary cortisol was found more suitable regarding to the advantages of the other tests for hypercortisolemia screening. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that cortisol levels were not different in obese patients with or without Type 2 DM, and also suggested that midnight salivary cortisol might be a useful screening testfor hypercortisolemia.
