- Abstract
Design management has changed greatly since Peter Gorb's definition in 1990. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the various models of design management and to explain their limitations, given the paradigm shift within the design profession from an activity to a knowledge-based profession. The territory of design in management science is developed in detail within the limits of these diverging forces. A convergent model of design-value management, based not on practices but on management science models, is developed and applied. This is pertinent to the emerging trend in design leadership and to the potential for design thinking input ahead of the new challenges facing contemporary managers--sense building, complexity, innovation, and the socially responsible organization.
