- Abstract
This article discusses hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) in patients with cirrhosis, which is a specific type of kidney dysfunction that occurs in the presence of ascites and cirrhosis. The article highlights the high incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with cirrhosis, with increased mortality and progression to chronic kidney disease. The diagnostic criteria for AKI and HRS have undergone revisions, and the article presents the recommendations for the definition and diagnosis of these conditions. The article also discusses the specific management of HRS-AKI, including the use of vasoconstrictors and albumin administration. The timing of renal replacement therapy and the role of biomarkers in AKI phenotyping are also discussed.
