- Abstract
Spruce magnesium bisulphite pulps with different rest lignin contents can be bleached to a high brightness level in a five steps sequence without chlorine only with H2O2 and CIO2. For the bleaching of pulps with low rest lignin content more chemicals are required when using Mg as the base compared to Na. When bleaching pulps with higher rest lignin content there is a difference in consumption of chemicals. When using a mixture ot Mg(OH)2/NaOH the bleaching of pulps with low and normal lignin content can be done with less chemicals than when using Mg (OH) alone. High yields and good pulp strength properties can be achieved when bleaching pulps with high rest lignin content. However, it must be doubted whether the higher consumption of bleaching chemicals are justified by the advantages of higher pulp yields and better strength properties.
