- Abstract
Initial reversed sonority clusters have been reported in Pashto in a number of studies (e.g., Bell & Saka, 1982; Levi, 2004; Khan, 2012 among others) in literature. Such features are considered among the interested features of Pashto phonology. The present paper attempts to identify and analyse reversed sonority clusters at both initial and final positions of Pashto syliable. The data is taken from major dictionaries and 5000 words recorded from everyday conversation of the speakers from the Yousafzai dialect of the language. The results not only confirm previous studies but also highlight some other important aspects of the typical clusters in Pashto. The study is the first attempt on the application of OT methodology for determining the unmarked Pashto syllable structure. The conclusion is drawn towards the ranking of the relevant constraints and phonological typology of the language.
