- Title
Pig patent revolt.
- Authors
Meldolesi, Anna
- Abstract
The article reports on the opposition of Germany to a patent filed by Iowa-based Newsham Choice Genetics before the European Patent Office (EPO), that covers a market-assisted test to breed meatier pigs by identifying a polymorphism in the leptin receptor gene. As a reponse to the decision of the EPO to grant the patent to Newsham, activists and farmers demonstrated outside the EPO office in Munich on April 15, 2009. But according to Gordon Wright of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys in London, Newsham will likely enforce the patent against the testing kit suppliers rather than pig breeders.
