- Abstract
The article is a letter addressed to Sir Keir and Mr Streeting, expressing support for an independent investigation of the NHS commissioned by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. The authors argue that the chronic underfunding of the NHS and the adoption of a neoliberal market paradigm have led to low morale, burnout, and recruitment difficulties in primary care. They advocate for a shift towards valuing personal relationships, continuity of care, and a broader context of people's lives in healthcare. The authors also emphasize the need for adequate funding, re-wilding and re-wiggling of primary care, and a change in philosophy to promote self-efficacy and discourage a customer/provider model of healthcare. They call for subsidiarity in organizing healthcare systems and an end to toxic managerialism. The authors argue that improving professional morale and promoting continuity of relationships have financial benefits and reference the successful reforms of the Labour Government in the 1960s.
