- Abstract
This is a literature review aimed to build consensus on the teaching of psychiatric nursing and mental health for undergraduate nursing student based on the psychiatric reform. The review was performed in Lilacs, Cinahl databases, and Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations of the University of Sao Paulo. The literature found identified the need for courses in psychiatric nursing and mental health aimed at demystifying the madness, the development of skills-oriented reformist ideals, such as creativity, humanity, multidisciplinary team, and interpersonal relations, and introduce students to new methods of mental health in order to link theory and practice. In conclusion, the authors suggest the study of content and development of activities which allow the redefinition of nursing students perception of madness and that enable nurses to carry out a qualified and beneficial care to mental health care users.
