- Title
HIV: Not-so-innocent bystanders.
- Authors
Cox, Andrea L.; Siliciano, Robert F.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the depletion of CD4 or T helper cells during a process of pyroptosis, a cell death mechanism that takes place in HIV infected persons. It reveals that high level of immune activation is responsible for the loss of CD4 cells. It mentions that more than 95 percent of CD4 cells that die during HIV-1 infection, are quiescent cells which are withdrawn from cell cycle and do not proliferate.
