- Abstract
THE gemmae of Marchantia polymorpha L. are approximately discoidal with two apical notches 180° from each other1,2. An apical notch marks the location of paired apical cells. Radiobiological data on gemmae of Marchantia indicate that the apical growth of a gemma need not necessarily be the only type of growth occurring in the proliferation of a viable outgrowth from a gemma3-5. In addition, it has been shown that cell survival within the irradiated gemma is correlated with nuclear volume differences among the different cells4,5. These results are similar to those reported for the radiosensitivity of 'higher plants' by Sparrow and co-workers6-8, Osborne et al.9,10, and Lunden11, although the former authors6-8 state that the volume of the chromosome at interphase is a better index of radiosensitivity than nuclear volume.
