- Abstract
Introduction: Evaluation of life quality can be an important source of the information about health. It also identifies the population of increased risk morbidity, which allows to improve prevention activities. Depression can be caused by somatic illnesses including cancers. The persons with depression symptoms suffering from cancer more often than those without depression respond badly to the treatment which can extend their recovery. The aim of the study was the comparison of quality of life and depression in women with established cancer, endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer surgically treated and then treated with adjuvant radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Material and methods: The study was conducted in the years 2013 - 2014 in Świętokrzyskie Oncology Centre in Kielce. The study involved 107 women diagnosed with endometrial cancer and 42 female patients with ovarian cancer diagnosed between the ages of 50 - 75 years. To conduct the study we used the Quality of Life Questionnaire EORTC QLQ-30, Beck Depression Self-Assessment Scale and a sociodemographic medical questionnaire. Results: The obtained results indicate some trends within the prevalence of statistical dependence between the studied variables relating to the quality of life and depression. It has been shown that patients manifesting depression differed from those not showing such symptoms in quality of life, and most of the results were statistically significant on the analyzed scales. The statistical relationship between the intensity of depression and the evaluation of the quality of life in patients with cancer of reproductive organs was confirmed. Conclusion: There was no significant statistical difference in the quality of life and the severity of depression in female patients with cancer of the reproductive organs. People who had no symptoms of depression presented higher quality of life.
