- Abstract
A pilot study was conducted using a sample of three sport dance couples of different quality levels (Latin-American dances ¬- LA, and ballroom dances - ST) so as to establish whether the SAGIT tracking system is an appropriate tool to study the loading on dancers. The study aimed to establish any differences between dance couples of different quality levels during ST and LA dances as well as between different dances in terms of dancers' loadings. All couples danced at the same time two ST dances (English waltz and tango) and two LA dances (samba and rumba). The dancers were recorded directly to a DVD using one camera at a frequency of 25 images per second. The recordings were processed with the SAGIT tracking system. The study focused on the trajectory and average velocity of the dancers' movements in selected ST and LA dances. The results showed there was no need to track both the male and female dancers as the trajectory and average velocity of both of them were practically identical. On the contrary, with the LA dances the trajectories and the average velocity of movement differed between the males and females. In terms of the studied dimensions, obvious differences were also identified between couples of different quality levels. It was demonstrated that the SAGIT tracking system can indeed be used to study trajectory, velocity and the way male and female dancers move; however, an annotation module should be used in conjunction to allow for a more detailed analysis of the movement structures in dance.
