- Abstract
The article focuses on the life and works of medical professional Arthur H. Schmale. The world of palliative care, psychosocial oncology, and psychosomatic medicine lost one of their pioneers in the spring of 1993 when Schmale died. Schmale has touched the lives of many who came to know him as students, residents, fellows, practitioners, researchers and patients. Schmale was an early proponent of hospice care principles in this country. He worked both nationally and locally to ensure access to and education about an alternative approach to caring for the terminally ill.
