- Abstract
Objective: In this study, we aimed to retrospectively evaluate the distribution of antigen positivity and its relation with demographic data in stool samples from patients with clinical gastroenteritis findings sent to our faculty Serology-ELISA Laboratory between January 2007 and December 2009 for the amoeba antigen test. Methods: We investigated 260 kd Entamoeba histolytica Gal- or GalNAc-spesific lectin antigen in stool samples that were sent to Serology/ELISA Laboratory from different clinics and outpatient clinics using ELISA (Ridascreen Entamoeba [c1701], R-Biopharm, Germany). Results: 33 (7%) of 476 stool samples that were admitted for antigen test were determined as positive. Of 33 cases, 11 (33%) were between the ages of 41-50. Amoeba antigen positivity was detected mostly in autumn months in 14 (42%) cases. Conclusions: Because of the low sensitivity of direct microscopy, we suggest that antigen detection using ELISA is beneficial for confirming the diagnosis in patients suspected of having amebiasis, to determine the treatment or to prevent unnecessary treatment.
