- Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes Mellitus is a set of metabolic disorders where the body is unable to adequately metabolize the glucose generated by food intake. Physical and psychological factors influence the implementation of self-care behaviors to control the disease. The aim of this review was to perform a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of psychological interventions on glycemic control in the Mexican population. Methods: Studies of psychological interventions in Mexican population were included. The databases consulted were MEDLINE, EBSCO, Google Scholar, ScieLO, PUBMED and Conricyt. Results: Ten studies were included in the meta-analysis. The assessment of methodological bias results in one study with high risk of bias, six with moderate risk and three studies with low risk. The effect size obtained on reduction in blood glucose in general was g = -.419, on the measure of capillary glucose reduction was g = -.464 and on HbA1c was g = -.471. Discussion: It is discussed the implications of conducting interventions that encourage the active participation of people with Diabetes Mellitus through self-care behaviors. Due to the chronic condition of the disease, it is necessary to implement strategies to change lifestyles in this population considering the contextual barriers that prevent achieving optimal treatment adherence.
