- Abstract
Background: The Mayo Clinic in Arizona has 9,848 employees. The total number of self-declared Black or African American (AA) employees on the Arizona campus is 447, or 4.54 percent. One Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences (MCSHS) faculty member on the Arizona campus is self-declared as Black or AA. A grant project seeks to increase the number of self-declared Black faculty in MCSHS on the Arizona campus by at least five percent within five years. Methods: A grant team conducted a literature review regarding what attracts Black or AA health science providers to faculty roles. A standard question set was used to interview current self-declared Black or AA MCSHS faculty and other (non-Mayo) Black or AA healthcare providers in Phoenix to inform the strategy to attract and retain additional Black or AA MCSHS faculty. Results: Initial interviews noted high family and self-motivation in current self-declared Black or AA MCSHS faculty. Recommendations for more interviews include self-declared Black or AA faculty at Mayo Clinic's other schools in Arizona (Medical School, Graduate School), self-declared Black or AA health science staff at Mayo who may not be aware of/ have not considered a faculty role, and members of Black or AA health sciences professional organizations and Black or AAs. Conclusions: It is expected that the grant team will recommend and implement measurable tactics to increase self-declared Black or AA health science faculty representation and retention at MCSHS in Arizona.
