- Abstract
Hepatozoon sp. is a canine parasite, transmitted by ingestion of infected ticks. The transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) is a benign and sexually transmitted infection, transmitted by contact with mucous membranes in dogs. For this report, we performed fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of a node in the neck, stained with diff-quick and microscopic examination performed, where cells were found compatible with TVT, which showed characteristic inclusions of Hepatozoon sp.. None of the species of the parasite seems to have tropism for neoplastic cells. It's possible that the presence of merozoites of Hepatozoon sp. in TVT cells has a relation to epitopes commonly found in macrophages.
