- Title
VIRTUES OR VALUES? BEHIND THE VALUES CONTROVERSY.
- Authors
Delivuk, John Allen
- Abstract
The article examines the process of defining values of libraries as initiated by the American Library Association (ALA). Reference is made to Michael Gorman's "Our Enduring Values" which introduces the problem of using the idea of values. The views of Gertrude Himmelfarb are discussed in relation to the use of the term. Friedrich Nietzsche's use of it in the 1880's is analyzed along with the identity problems created by the shift from virtues to values for institutions like libraries. Proposals to ALA are presented along with the goal of such proposals.
