Mirror, Mirror….: Down with the Linear Model.

- Abstract
The article talks about the overuse and possible abuse of the linear model by educational researchers. The educational research community might do well to question the present use of the linear model, and to consider an evaluation of its usefulness. The foundations of this problem go deeply into the sociology of knowledge, where fundamental issues such as just how science progresses (or ought to progress) are debated . In this paper, however, discussion is limited to one small part of research methods. The article is divided into three main sections. The first addresses the problems associated with the present use of the linear model. The second provides some empirical evidence to help strengthen the arguments made against the model, and the third offers some alternatives along with suggestions for their implementation. The topic of educational research is one which is inherently controversial. Criticism has been based upon its amount as opposed to the value of its results, the lack of productivity of its theories, its domination by psychology, and its lack of breadth.
