Isotope dilution analysis for speciation.

- Abstract
The article presents information about isotope dilution analysis for speciation. The use of compounds isotopic ally labelled with D and/or 13C has been widespread in organic chemistry during the last 25 years but it was only few years ago, coinciding with the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry boom, when this valuable tool was introduced into trace metal speciation analysis. The impressive possibilities of applying isotope dilution methodologies for speciation were first described as spiking the sample with the species under study isotopic ally labelled with an enriched isotope (species-specific mode) or the addition of a simple enriched isotope of the metallic element after carrying out the physical separation of the different species present in the sample (species-unspecific mode).
