- Title
Old English Brost at Line 2176B of Beowulf.
- Authors
Bammesberger, Alfred
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the Old English poem "Beowulf" is presented in which the author discusses the word "brost" in line 2176B of the manuscript of the poem. The author suggests that B. Thorpe was the first to emend the word to "br[e]ost," meaning "breast," but that the wording should not have been changed. The author discusses "brost" as a variant spelling of "brēost" and analyzes evidence from Germanic languages to suggest that the word should not have been emended.
