- Title
THOMAS PERCY AND THE RECRUITING OFFICER.
- Authors
Davis, Bertram H.
- Abstract
This article focuses on Thomas Percy, editor of the book "Reliques of Ancient English Poetry," and the effort to identify George Farquhar's characters in drama "The Recruiting Officer," cited by J.C. Ross in his recent article published in the journal "Notes & Queries." Ross's material for this part of his article was derived primarily from the 1825 History of Shrewsbury, by Hugh Owen and John Brickdale Blakeway, who stated that Anne Blakeway of Shrewsbury communicated the information to her husband's nephew, the Reverend Edward Blakeway. It was, in fact, preserved in a letter from Edward Blakeway to Thomas Percy written less than a year before Anne Blakeway's death in February, 1766.
