- Abstract
Introduction: Posterior crossbite (PCB) and/or transverse maxillary deficiency are prevalent malocclusions in the population. They can be corrected by means of different treatments, depending on their characteristics and the patient’s skeletal maturation. Objective: Discuss the main methods of maxillary expansion in adults, with emphasis on pre-expansion evaluation. Methods: Diagnosis, occlusal characteristics, sutural maturation, previous periodontal conditions, as well as the effects and therapies resulting from this initial evaluation were addressed. All these topics were discussed through the comparison among the Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expander (MARPE), Surgically-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (SARPE) and Three-Segment Surgically-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion (TS-SARPE) techniques. Results: The previous diagnosis of the transverse occlusion relationship and the amount of expansion are essential for the success of the treatment. However, mainly the periodontal conditions of the individual must be considered, since most of the expected results of expansion are from buccal tooth inclinations. Additional procedures incorporated into the two techniques (SARPE and MARPE) proved to be encouraging resources to increase the success rate, reducing undesirable side effects, and enhancing the quantity and quality of the median palatal suture opening. Conclusion: This is be the first article of a trilogy that will address the most relevant aspects related to orthopedic maxillary expansion in adults using different techniques.
