- Abstract
Eleven patients who received co-trimoxazole at standard dosage for periods ranging from 3 to 30 months (mean 10 months), were studied. Nine suffered from severe chronic bronchitis, 1 had bronchiectasis, and 1 was a typhoid carrier. Clinical results in the patients with chronic bronchitis were impressive, and the combination was well-tolerated. The 11 chest patients all had purulent sputum before treatment, and this became mucoid in every case, with eradication of and . was eradicated from the stools of the typhoid carrier after 2 months but recurred 2 months alter completing a 6-month course of therapy. Haematological investigation suggested that a few cases developed asymptomatic folate depletion, which was reversible on withdrawing the drug. It is therefore recommended that patients in whom several months co-trimoxazole treatment at standard dosage is indicated should be monitored with respect to haemoglobin, white blood count, polymorph lobe count and serum folate.
