- Abstract
Moving into the second section, I argue that Mimio stands for a character toy through both expressions within the manga and its intertextual connection to Tezuka's other characters, including the widely beloved animated protagonist Atomu. Aside from a juxtaposition between Mimio and the underground creatures, Mimio's ontological stance of a manga character also becomes evident through a comparison of the subtle difference in deathbed scenes between the 1948 and 1970 manga works. Compared to the original work, the death scene in the remake enriches the character of Mimio, as he fulfills the dead girl's final wish - to do what she could not in her finite life.[22] At the end of Abanchuru 21, Mimio does not die on a bed but on the ground instead, which further erases similarity of his death with others' deaths in the manga. Through character merchandise, these fictional characters transgress into reality, just like Mimio's adventure in the human world in the form of a character toy.
