IDENTIFICATION OF FOOD POISONING OUTBREAK CAUSE IN SITIARJO VILLAGE, MALANG, INDONESIA, 2016.

- Abstract
Background: Food Poisoning Outbreak occurred in Sitiarjo Village, Malang District, on May 28, 2016. The number of 22 villagers suffered food poisoning after eating food that come from the village event which called “bersih desa”. Investigation aimed to identify the cause and risk factor of food poisoning outbreak. Materials and Methods: The study design was unmatched case-control with ratio of 1:2. Cases were villagers who came to the village event and suffered food poisoning, while controls were villagers who had no food poisoning symptoms. Interviews also conducted to food processors and organizers of the event. Determination of the food poisoning outbreaks cause based on the risk factors and odds ratio. Result: The foods served on the event were chicken soup, chicken rica-rica, watermelon, orange, mineral water, and sweet tea. The first cases of food poisoning occurred at 08.00 a.m by 2 cases. Symptoms of poisoning occurred were dizziness (90.9%), vomiting (90.9%), nausea (77.3%), sweating (63.6%), diarrhea (59.1%), and fever (9,1%). The suspected source of food poisoning was the chicken soup (aOR = 5.5, 95% CI = 1.3; 24.1) and watermelon (aOR = 19.3, 95% CI = 2.1; 177.9). The incubation period ranges from 1 to 6 hours. Conclusion: Based on incubation period and clinical symptoms, the food poisoning possibly caused by Staphylococcus aureus contamination. Based on the field findings, health officers are encouraged to educate about hygiene and sanitation on food processing and storage.
