- Abstract
Air quality monitoring constitutes the scientific basis for the development of strategies for controlling air pollution in urban areas and reducing possible impacts on population health. On this aim, measurements must be spatially representative and sustained over time. The objective of this work was to compile the available information on air quality in the city of Buenos Aires, in order to summarize the main results and carry out a critical analysis of the current situation. As a result of this review, it was found that different campaigns have been carried out during the last five decades for measuring pollutants, being mostly discontinuous. The surveyed data shows that the concentration of pollutants in the air is mainly associated with the intensity of vehicular flow and exhibits a seasonal cycle. Recent measurements in the City showed acceptable values of CO and NO2, but relatively high values of particulate matter, a parameter that affects health negatively. At present, although the city has automatic and continuous measurement stations located in different neighborhoods, they are scarce and do not have spatial representation. Expanding the network and complementing it with other estimation methods, such as remote sensors or simulation models, are recommended.
