- Abstract
This article discusses Brentano's theory of emotions. Brentano understands that emotions are intentional acts that rely on judgments. These acts play a key role both in the identification of value and in motivating action. After presenting the different views on emotions current at the end of the 19th century, we look at the core of Brentano's theory, his view of ethics and his legacy among both phenomenologists and analytic philosophers.
