- Authors
Chavero, Elena Lazos
- Abstract
The article explores the debate about the introduction of transgenic maize crops in areas where local varieties of maize are grown by family farmers. It focuses on the production of maize in two Mexican states, Oaxaca and Sinaloa, comparing their agricultural and ethnic-cultural policies, describing attitudes toward native and transgenic seed varieties and considering the impact on seed variety, mechanization and production systems. The author concludes with a discussion of the politization of the issue of genetically modified organisms and its social impact.
