- Abstract
Contact allergy due to Lactuca sativa L. and its different cultivated forms used as food like cabbage or iceberg salad and roman salad has been rarely been reported. Since 1932, when H.J. Rinkel and R.M. Bayleat described their first case only, 14 further cases have been confirmed either by patch or other tests. Most have been recently reviewed. As the responsible allergens, the 2 sesquiterpene lactones, lactucin and lactucopicrin, have now become available; the patient of Helander and 1 additional case were reinvestigated with the pure compounds.
