- Abstract
This article discusses allergy to propylgallate with unusual clinical and histological features. The gallic acid esters are potentially highly allergenic. They are used as antioxidants in foods and sometimes in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations to prevent cleaving of lipid components into products of smaller molecular weight. The histology of a subject with ulcer, after applying an antibiotic ointment containing democycline, showed epidermal pseudocysts full of keratin in contact with the surface through small ostia. The wall of the pseudocysts showed granular thickening. There were linear detachments between dermis and epidermis.
