- Abstract
The article "King Cotton. A History of Global Capitalism" discusses the history of global capitalism and the role of cotton as a common thread in this history. The author, Sven Beckert, emphasizes the significance of cotton for the industrial revolution and argues that cotton and its production conditions enabled the industrial revolution, including slavery. The article also mentions the history of rubber and the exploitation of rubber in the Congo and Brazil. It is noted that slavery was officially largely prohibited internationally at that time, but still practiced in some cases. The article concludes with a mention of the book "The Dream of the Celt" by Mario Vargas Llosa, which deals with a case of slavery and mass murder in the borderland between Peru and Colombia.
