- Abstract
There is an ethnic difference in the relationship between anthropometric parameters and insulin resistance; in Japan and Korea main percentage of diabetic patients have normal body weight. Objective: To determine the relationship between anthropometric parameters, insulin resistance and beta-cell function in Venezuelan obese women and normal body weight women during the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). Methodology: This study included 15 normal body weight women of body mass index (BMI) 21.8 + 1.9 kg/m2 and 15 obese women of BMI=35.3 + 5.3 kg/m2. Waist (WC) and hip circumference were measured and the waist-hip ratio (WHR) calculated. Both groups were submmitted to OGTT (75g load, 2h); the following indices were calculated: homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), homeostasis model assessment of b-cell function (HOMA-β), Matsuda index and insulinogenic index (IGI). We determined the relationship between anthropometric parameters and former metabolic indices. Results: in obese women, HOMA-IR was positively correlated with BMI (r=0,74, p=0,0015), WC (r=0,82, p=0,0002), and the WHR (r=0,52, p=0,048). The HOMA-β was positively correlated with the WC in obese women (r=0,65, p=0,0094). No correlation was observed between IGI and anthropometric parameters. The Matsuda index was negatively correlated with BMI (r=-0,50, p=0,046), WC (r=-0,62, p=0,010) and WHR (r=-0,65, p=0,0085) in obese women. Conclusion: HOMA-IR, HOMA-β and Matsuda index have a strong relationship with anthropometric parameters in obese Venezuelan women, demonstrating a close association between anthropometric indices and insulin resistance increase.
