- Abstract
This paper analyzes by finite element method the effect of gap geometry (pole pitch, gap length, tooth width ration, thickness of permanent magnet, etc.) on the magnetic field modulation factor and thrust characteristics of P/T machine. The relation between gap geometry and thrust is analyzed first by using BLI law to demonstrate that it is possible to calculate the thrust characteristics if the gap geometry and the magnetization characteristics of permanent magnet are known. It is also shown that there exists an optimal magnet geometry which maximizes the thrust. Next, the magnetic field is calculated taking into account the magnetic saturation of inductor teeth. The magnetic flux passing through the teeth is calculated to determine the mmi vs. thrust characteristics. The results thus obtained agree well with those calculated from BLI law and it is certain that the maximum thrust of P/T machine exceeds 10 N/cm. The validity of the calculated results is confirmed by comparing them with the experimental results obtained from two-phase test LPM.
