- Title
THE MOUTH OF THE BAY.
- Authors
Fireman, Janet; Kale, Shelly
- Abstract
The article discusses the history of California's San Francisco Bay, beginning with Spanish exploration of the region in the 16th-century. The authors note Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala's entrance into the bay in 1775 as well as U.S. explorer John Charles Frémont's travels there. Particular focus is given to the popularity of the bay, nicknamed the Golden Gate, in 19th-century U.S. poetry, photography, art, and lithography. The authors also briefly touch upon the development of industry in the region following the 1848 California Gold Rush, and present images of various landscape paintings depicting the bay.
