- Authors
Wright, Tim J.; Hyner, Gerald C.
- Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the principal barriers to participation in health promotion programs for older adults using three samples of subjects: program participants, non-participants, and administrators of retirement facilities and senior centers. Results showed that the main barriers to program participation for older adults were health issues, time constraints, and fear of exercise. The main reason for not participating was lack of confidence in, and unfamiliarity with program personnel. Suggestions for improving recruitment included enhanced advertising of the program and the provision of substantive and relevant program descriptions including clear and complete credentials of the program providers.
