- Abstract
In the present study, the mesoporous α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles have been prepared by nanocasting method using mesoporous silica, KIT-6, as the hard template. The ratio of KIT-6 and iron precursor was varied to synthesize mesoporous iron oxides with different pore diameters. The structure, morphology and surface properties of the prepared mesoporous α-Fe2O3 were investigated by using small angle X-ray scattering and wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms and BET studies, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Powder XRD pattern exhibited rhombohedral structure for the prepared iron oxides. The sorption studies revealed the mesoporosity of the prepared oxides with pore diameter in mesoporous range. SEM images showed that the particles have spherical morphology and the average sizes of the iron oxides were in the range of 28-38 nm as calculated by TEM. Mesoporous α-Fe2O3 with different weight ratios of template/precursor were then tested as humidity sensors within the relative humidity range of 11-93%. Pore diameter is found to influence humidity sensing as better sensing is achieved with increased pore diameter.
