- Title
Mitochondria split with a calcium hit.
- Authors
Robinson, Richard
- Abstract
The article focuses on a study on mitochondrial fission caused by an influx of calcium into neurons. Under the study, mitochondrial responses to an increase in potassium levels where analyzed. The study also indicates that a cytoplasmic dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) serves as the final effector of the fission signal. Lead researcher Masayuki Matsushita states that Ca&sup 2+;/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase (CaMKIα) plays roles in the mitochondrial morphology.
